Tell me about Silver Lakes in Michgan. We were supposed to hit the Jersey shore 3 weekends from now, July 9-12, but somebody blew us off and we are pissed. So I said I would plan a vacation within 12 hours drive. Which puts Detroit in the mix. Upon suggestion from Montegoman he said if we were rolling out in the WJ, we could hit Silver Lakes dunes - about 3h west of the city - for a day trip. Anyone been there, done that? Also the only requirement is beach, since we kind of want to lay out and drink beer somewhere far away from Maine for a day.
Any alternate places within a half a day drive from Portland, Maine with a beach and fun activities?

Silver lake is great. I’ve been with my XJ and ZJ and would thoroughly recommend it. All you have to do is buy a $20 flag, bolt it on and you’re good to go.

Yupp yupp. Just typical sand things like air down tires and keep momentum up. The Jeeps you can rent there are base model wranglers if thats any indication of what you need. Just don’t be this guy:

It’s a good time. Used to go there every year until it got too expensive. Taking my bike, truck, wife’s ATV out racks up ORV and state park sticker fees real fast. Air down to 15-18 psi in your tires, turn any traction control off, if you are going up a hill but your tires are spinning and the vehicle stops moving forward. STOP. You are not going to get unstuck by putting your foot to the floor unless you have a special built vehicle. Remember that most dunes are just as steep going up as they are on the back side IE don’t carry so much speed over the top you launch it.
Keep your eyes open and be aware of what is around you at all time. There are a lot of people that don’t, usually the people in rental jeeps, and they are the scariest to watch out for.

yeah I have honed my oversand skills pretty well over the years, but always game for a reminder. I will be pussyfooting around quite a bit I am sure for a bit - but also keeping in mind a misstep will put our ride home in jeopordy

Oh on the beach theres a lot of water holes. The edges may be a few inches, even a foot deep, but the middle can be several feet deep without warning. Every year I see someone hydro lock their motor in them.

we just picked it up from my girls mom, bought by literally a little old lady who got it brand new to make sure she could get her medications in the middle of winter. 2011 had 12K miles on it, girls mom bought it so her Charger R/T didnt have to pull winter duty. She said she wanted one with “a map in it” so she will likely get a new GC before the winter. Her loss. Base model except for fog lights - perfect

Well I’ll let you know ahead of time the costs too.
ORV stickers - $36 (you’ll need both there’s a $10 one and $26 one can be bought at any Meijer store)
State park sticker - $11
Flag bracket - usually $15 If you have front tow hooks they are made to mount to them, can get at the store next to the entrance. Has to be mounted on the front of the vehicle
Flag - around $20
If you have a cooler they’ll check it before you go onto the dunes for alcohol. no booze allowed out there.

Tis a fun time. Big enough to have some fun and you can drive to the beach and park. Only need a flag and a state park pass. Its more fun on an ATV with paddles tho...
